CCPS has begun instructing “Advanced Math” classes, what does this mean?

The following response is from Mr. Donn Hicks, Elementary Math Supervisor:

As you know from previous correspondence, our teaching teams will be utilizing an instructional model this year called specialization. Through the use of this design, teachers will be able to focus the preparation for their lessons on meeting the needs of your children is specific subject areas. Within each classroom, teachers will use the results of ongoing assessments to form purposeful, flexible and small student groupings to allow them to meet the needs of each student. Within the subject of mathematics, it is certainly possible that a classroom may include a group of children who are learning above grade level mathematical concepts, (Advanced Benchmarks), while another group of children are learning on-grade level concepts. This grouping technique is very similar to the traditional set-up of Integrated Language Arts classrooms in which varying fluency rates or comprehension strengths. As with any instructional or grouping practice, the primary purpose is to meet the individual student where his or her learning needs to occur. Within the CCPS elementary mathematics program, teachers use ongoing pretests and other assessment techniques to determine the prior knowledge of students before teaching each content cluster. Our teachers at Mt. Airy Elementary are highly trained professionals who work diligently to meet the needs of all children.
