PARRS/MAES SCIENCE FAIR
FRIDAY, MARCH 1ST
6:30 PM TO 8:30 PM
In the PARRS CAFETERIA

I would like to welcome all students grades K to 5 to participate in this fun, creative, and exciting event! The science fair is a chance for you to show off your ability to answer questions and run experiments about everything from space to engineering to how living things interact.   Please encourage your child to participate in this fun and educational event. Science is exciting and allows us to question and explore the world we live in.

This year’s Science Fair will have 5 categories

1. Creative problem solving – engineering (how to do something)
2. Physics/Astronomy – solar systems, space, satellites, force, motion
3. Chemistry
4. Earth Science – volcanoes, crystals/rocks, earthquakes
5. Biology/Environmental
Your project can be done several different ways either by actually doing a demonstration,  presenting a poster board with your results from research or experiments. You could also present your model or collections with research about it. All students will receive ribbons for participating and there will be judging for an honorable mention for each category along with other awards for things like Most Original, Most reactive, Coolest Collection, etc.

I know sometimes it is hard to come up with an idea, so attached is a list of good websites and books and a list of suggestions to help you and your student decide on an idea. This is not a school project, so it would have to done in the evenings and weekends.

Attached is a sign up sheet for your child, the form is due by Feb 1st .  Feel free to email me at rmartinod@comcast.net with any questions.

Thank you, The Science Fair Committee

It is only September and we are off to an amazing year.  The past few weeks have been full of  positive energy and FUNtasic events!!!

POPSICLES with PRINCIPALS: There is no better way to start the school year than to have popsicles with our Principals Mrs. Covino of Parr’s Ridge, Mrs. Blonkowski of MAES, and Assistant Principal Mrs. Cramer of MAES.  We are looking forward to having a FUNtastic school year with them and and welcome them to lead our schools.  We also are happy to welcome back our Assistant Principal Mrs. Bubnash of Parr’s Ridge.

THE FIRST WEEKS of SCHOOL: The FUN didn’t stop with popsicles.  One of my favorite things at the beginning of the school year is to see excitement and positive energy flowing through the hallways of both Parr’s Ridge and Mount Airy Elementary Schools.  It’s contagious!!! COMMITTEE CHAIR KICKOFF MEETING: Speaking of positive energy, our Committee Chairs all seem to be hard at work.  Our Kickoff Meeting was AWESOME.  We had a great time sharing information, eating yummy food, and getting to know each other.  I thank you for jumping into your positions and helping our students and our schools.                                                                                                              ***Go Team*** Go Team***

BACK to SCHOOL NIGHTS: It was a great  pleasure to see so many wonderful families at the Back to School Nights.  Thank you to everyone that came out and stopped by our PTA tables to say “Hi” and to show your support for our Elementary Schools.  Parr’s Ridge and Mount Airy Elementary are blessed with so many parents who are willing to get involved. I hope you are able to find a volunteer position that fits your special abilities.

BACK to SCHOOL SOCIAL: We could not have had a more beautiful afternoon for the Back to School Social.  THANK YOU to all of our volunteers and teachers that gave your time to make this community event a great success.  You make a difference every day!  The PTA appreciates the countless hours that our teachers and faculty give to our schools, families, and students.

What’s in your lunchbox?

I know last Spring I was starting to wonder if my son would actually turn into a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because that is what I packed him everyday for lunch.  This year, I have decided to mix it up a bit and find some cool new HEALTHY recipes that both kids will eat.   Here are some of my favorites that I found on line.

  • Pretzel Kabobs - Ham, turkey, and cheese rolled up together, sliced, and skewered with pretzel stick
  • Early Riser - Sliced hard-boiled egg and 2 mini whole-grain waffles
  • Power Pita - 2 mini whole wheat pita pockets with grilled-chicken strips and veggies
  • Fiesta -  Bean salad with containers of shredded cheese, tortilla chips, and salsa to make healthy nachos
  • DIY Yogurt Parfait - a vanilla yogurt with side containers of low-fat granola, dried cherries, chopped walnuts for your child to mix in
  • Lunch Fun due- Turkey breast & ham cut into bite-size pieces, cubes of Cheese cut into bite-size cubes, Ranch dressing for toothpicks to dip

Please share your fun ideas for main courses, sides, and even after school snacks.  We could all use a little variety!!!!

Music to Our Ears

Music can be an important part of a child’s education and the PTA wants to encourage music education for our students.  One way to help develop musical skills is independent study.

The PTA has compile a list of instrumental and vocal music teachers in our area for those families who wish to further expand their child’s musical education.
