Reading Incentive BOOK IT! program
About The Reading Incentive Program
Parr's Ridge and Mt. Airy Elementary Schools are participating in the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! reading incentive program which begins in October and runs through March each school year. At the beginning of each month, the student will receive a calendar to keep track of the days he/she participated in any of the various reading activities listed below. These activities should be done at home, and any reading done at school should not be included.
Qualifying reading activities include:
- Independent Reading
- Reading to someone else
- Being read to by someone else
- Attend story time at public library or bookstore
- Read a "Bear Book" (Parr's Ridge)
- Practice Alphabet and sight-words using flashcards
- Listen to recording of a story while reading along in a book
- Working with reading software on the computer
The program is a great way to provide postive reinforcement to encourage reading, so please remind your child to fill out and return the calendar each month. All it takes is 20 minutes each day!
If you have questions, would like to find out more about the program, or would like to help, please contact Dawn Abell, Sue Askeland, or Shelley Lauffer.
Track Your Reading Time
Calendars will be provided to allow your child to track their progress throughout each month. Students should put a mark his/her calendar on the appropriate date if any one of the activities listed above is done for 20 minutes or more. A parent should initial the calendar, and it should be returned to the student's teacher at the beginning of the following month.
A few weeks after the calendars have been returned to school, students who have read for 20 days or more during the month will receive a free book of their choice, which the PTA purchases through the Scholastic Book Clubs, along with a Pizza Hut certificate. The certificate entitles the student to a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza. There is no purchase necessary, and the pizza can be taken to go.
